There are several models of data capture devices, namely barcode readers and barcode terminals. Although they look different, it’s difficult at first glance to determine which one really responds to your needs. Their features and components are often assembled to serve one particular industry. This is the case with several models that were specially designed for warehouse and stock management.

Strong

Their commonality is without a doubt their strength, which makes them ideal to use in more extreme environments. They passed the following tests:

  • falls (or any impact)
  • shock resistance (or endurance)
  • impermeability (against dust and splattering)

Moreover, many of these models can be used with case protection accessories which prolong the lifespan of the device. There’s a complete range of products with different levels of strength, so it all really depends on your needs.

Safe

In addition to the devices’ resistance in extreme environments, the designers also had user safety in mind. For example, a “distress” option may be added to certain models, or a personalized application can be added to other models to set off an alarm if the device is immobilized after a fall.

Powerful and ergonomic

Warehouses can have staggering dimensions. Managing inventory in these areas often means being far from a computer or loading station. So it’s important that devices designed for warehouse management have excellent autonomy, as is the case for most of these devices, whether or not they’re designed for warehouse and stock management. The same goes for many accessories used to attach the device to one’s belt. Some models can be equipped with a reader that can attach to one’s index finger or thumb, thereby making it a handheld device.

I’ve chosen a few models from the manufacturers Motorola, Intermec and Psion (recently purchased by Motorola) that I will present to you in my next blog post. I’ll present the information in a table so you can refer to it later.
